SwimSafer Programme Requirements in Singapore

Your Safety Is Our Priority

SwimSafer Singapore

Special Needs Swimming provides swimming and water-safety instruction using an individual pace and structured lesson planning. SwimSafer participation, registration and assessment are subject to the swimmer’s age, readiness, the instructor’s current accreditation and the applicable SportSG and Singapore Aquatics requirements. Private-pool delivery and assessment also depend on pool suitability and any required approval. Please contact us so we can explain the appropriate pathway before enrolment.

Private Swim Classes for all Age

What is SwimSafer?

SwimSafer 2.0 is Singapore’s national swimming and water-safety programme. It has six progressive stages and includes practical skills, water-safety knowledge, registration and assessment requirements. SportSG recommends a minimum entry age of six, although providers assess readiness individually. Lessons at a private or condominium pool do not automatically qualify for SwimSafer assessment: the instructor, participant registration, pool specifications, access arrangements and safety plan must meet the current programme requirements.

Who Is It For?

SwimSafer is intended for participants who meet the programme’s age and readiness requirements; SportSG recommends a minimum age of six. Younger children may take age-appropriate swimming lessons, but these should not be represented as SwimSafer unless the current programme requirements are met. For swimmers with additional support needs, lesson and assessment suitability should be discussed individually before registration. SwimSafer Stages Overview

SwimSafer Stage 1 | Beginner Water Skills & Safety

Your child takes the very first step in the water. They will learn how to float, blow bubbles whilst feeling safe and happy in the swimming pool.

SwimSafer Stage 2 | Fundamental Water Skills

We introduce basic swimming, breath control and swimming pool safety skills to make children feel comfortable when they move freely in the water.

SwimSafer Stage 3 | Personal & Stroke Development Skills

Children begin to learn proper swimming strokes  (like front crawl and breaststroke) while building important survival skills, such as sculling and treading water.

SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze | Improve Swimming Techniques

With the increase of confidence, children will be able to swim longer distances and use more proper swimming strokes, and introduced rescue and emergency techniques.

SwimSafer Stage 5 Silver | Advanced Swimming and Safety Skills

This stage focuses on advanced and long-distance swimming, and actual life-saving situations – all wearing ordinary clothes to create a sense of reality.

SwimSafer Stage 6 Gold | Master Long-Distance Swimming

Our final stage helps swimmers master every stroke, prepare for emergencies with self-rescue.

Why Special Needs Swimming Is The Right Choice?

Lessons use patient, structured instruction and can be adapted to the swimmer’s communication, sensory and support needs. Before enrolment, families should confirm the instructor’s current qualifications, the swimmer’s readiness, pool access and whether they are seeking general swimming lessons or formal SwimSafer registration and assessment.

Condominium-Pool Lessons: General swimming lessons may be available at a suitable condominium pool. Formal SwimSafer registration or assessment is separate and depends on current instructor, participant-registration, pool-specification, access and safety-plan requirements.

Instructor Qualifications: Ask us to confirm the assigned instructor’s current qualifications for the lesson or SwimSafer pathway you need. Accreditation and first-aid credentials should be verified for the specific instructor.

Individual Lesson Formats: One-to-one or small-group formats may be available. The suitable format depends on the swimmer’s water experience, communication, support and safety needs.

Structured Lesson Plans: Skills are introduced progressively from water familiarity and safety routines to swimming technique, based on the swimmer’s starting point. Progress varies and no particular outcome or completion timeline is guaranteed.

Safety Planning: Families should share relevant medical, communication and support information before lessons. The assigned instructor’s current credentials, pool access, supervision and emergency arrangements should be confirmed for the specific setting. Swimming lessons do not remove drowning risk or the need for active adult supervision.

Scheduling: Available lesson times depend on the instructor, pool access and the selected lesson format.

FAQ

1. What is SwimSafer 2.0?

SwimSafer 2.0 is Singapore’s national swimming and water-safety programme. It has six progressive stages, with practical skills, water-safety knowledge, registration and assessment requirements. Completion depends on meeting the requirements for the relevant stage; lessons alone do not guarantee certification.

2. Can SwimSafer be conducted at a condominium pool?

General swimming lessons may be conducted at a suitable condominium pool. Formal SwimSafer registration or assessment is separate. For private-pool assessments, current SportSG and Singapore Aquatics requirements include instructor validation, participant registration, pool-specification approval, access arrangements and an appropriate safety plan.

3. Is SwimSafer suitable for beginners or very young children?

Beginners may enter an appropriate stage when they meet the programme’s readiness requirements. SportSG recommends a minimum entry age of six. Younger children can take age-appropriate swimming lessons, but these should not be described as SwimSafer unless the programme’s current requirements are met.

4. How can I verify the instructor and assessment pathway?

Before enrolling, ask us to confirm the assigned instructor’s current SwimSafer accreditation and explain how registration, assessment and certification will be handled. SportSG publishes current SwimSafer programme guidance and registration details. Qualifications should be verified for the specific instructor rather than assumed from a general company statement.

5. What if my child has additional support needs or is worried about water?

Please tell us about communication preferences, sensory sensitivities, medical guidance, water experience and safety needs. We can discuss an appropriate lesson starting point, but formal SwimSafer registration and assessment suitability must be considered individually. Learning to swim does not remove drowning risk, so active adult supervision remains essential.
