Swimming Skills and Water-Safety Goals

Water Safety and Survival Skills

  • Important Life Skills: Swimming is a basic safety skill, especially for children who live near the water or like to play in the swimming pool. Drowning is the primary cause of injury to young children, and swimming courses provide valuable skills, such as floating, safely launching and treading water.
  • Awareness-Raising: Children learn how to identify dangers, understand the current and identify situations that need caution, so that children can stay safe in the water environment.

Movement and Swimming Skills

  • Movement Practice: Lessons can include kicking, paddling, floating and coordinated breathing at an individual pace.
  • Swimming Skills: Goals may include balance in the water, propulsion and returning safely to the pool edge.
  • Regular Participation: Lesson frequency and practice opportunities can be discussed without promising health or developmental outcomes.

Confidence Through Individual Progress

  • Gradual Progress: New water experiences and skills can be introduced in manageable steps, with time to pause when needed.
  • Individual Goals: Progress is reviewed against the swimmer’s starting point without fixed promises or timelines.

Following Instructions and Problem-Solving

  • Following Instructions: Coaches may use short safety cues, demonstrations and repetition during the lesson.
  • Water-Safety Decisions: Activities can practise recognising the pool edge, stopping on cue and choosing a safe response with instructor support.

Your Safety Is Our Priority

Key Skills We Focus On

At Special Needs Swimming, we don’t just teach swimming — we build trust, confidence, and comfort with every lesson. Our instructors are assigned according to availability and swimmer needs; families can ask to confirm the proposed instructor's relevant current qualifications and experience, offering one-on-one and small group lessons right in your community pool. With a focus on safety, inclusion, and steady progress, we create a positive and supportive learning journey for every swimmer.

1. Water Safety Education: Children learn how to stay safe in and around the water-such as knowing the rules of swimming pools, using safe entrances and exits, and knowing what to do in an emergency. These skills help children become more responsible and conscious swimmers.

2. Swimming Strokes and Techniques: We introduced the basic swimming methods to the children, such as swimming in a simple and step-by-step way and backstroke. Children will also learn how to walk, slide and move in the water, and have better control and coordination ability.

3. Breath Control and Submersion Skills: Breathing control is an important part of swimming. Children practice blowing bubbles, hold their breath for a moment, and gradually get used to immersing their faces and heads in water.

4. Floating and Treading Water: We teach children how to float and lie on their backs on the water and how to keep balance by treading water. These are the basic skills to make children more confident and safer in deeper water.

5. Water Confidence and Diving: Building confidence in the swimming pool is the key! Children learn to believe in themselves and their abilities in the water. When children feel more comfortable, they will also try basic diving skills in a safe and supportive way.

6. Fun and Engaging Swim Activities: Our classroom is full of games, songs and interactive activities to keep children focused in their studies. We believe that when children are happy, they will learn faster and stay motivated.

FAQ

1. What if my child is afraid of water or refuses to enter the water?

Don’t worry – this is more common than you think! Our coaches are trained to gently guide children through games, stories and encouragement. We have never forced any children into the water. Every child learns at his own pace, and we build trust step by step.

2. Does my child need to learn to swim before entering the first stage?

There’s no need! The first stage is very suitable for beginners, focusing on the basic safety and comfort when swimming in the water. Your child doesn’t need any swimming experience to start.

3. What should my child bring to class?

Please prepare a bathing suit, bath towel, goggles (if children are comfortable to wear) and a bottle of water. For young children, you may also want to prepare a light snack after class. If your child has favorite toys or comforters, please bring them with you in the first class!

4. What if the child doesn't like the coach?

We believe that the connection between coaches and children is crucial! If your child is not suitable for the coach, please tell us. We are glad to try to make changes to ensure that your children feel safe, motivated and interested in learning.

5. How can I confirm the assigned coach’s credentials?

Instructor assignment is subject to availability. Ask us to confirm the assigned coach’s relevant swimming, first-aid or rescue credentials before booking. Learning to swim does not remove drowning risk, so active adult supervision remains essential around water.
