Special Needs Swimming FAQ Singapore

This FAQ helps Singapore families plan private swimming lessons for a child or adult who may benefit from individual pacing, adapted communication or additional support. It provides general information only; lesson suitability, pool access and instructor availability must be confirmed for each swimmer.

Who are special needs swimming lessons for?

Lessons may be suitable for children or adults who benefit from individual instruction, predictable routines, adapted communication or a slower learning pace. Suitability is assessed from the swimmer’s needs, water experience, safety considerations and available pool arrangements.

Is a formal diagnosis required?

No diagnosis should be assumed or requested solely for marketing purposes. Families can describe the swimmer’s communication, mobility, sensory, behavioural and supervision needs so the team can discuss a suitable lesson approach. Relevant medical advice should be followed where applicable.

Where can lessons take place?

Lessons may be discussed at a suitable confirmed pool, including some public or private venues. Special Needs Swimming does not operate third-party pools. Entry rules, accessibility, external-coaching permission and availability must be checked before booking or travel.

Are lessons guaranteed to lead to SwimSafer certification?

No. SwimSafer registration, assessment and certification depend on swimmer readiness, an accredited instructor, a suitable approved venue and current programme administration. Read the SwimSafer programme guide.

How are instructors assigned?

Instructor assignment depends on availability and the swimmer’s needs. Families should ask the team to confirm the proposed instructor’s relevant current qualifications, certifications and experience before the first lesson.

Are swimming lessons a form of therapy?

No. Swimming lessons teach swimming and water-safety skills. They are not a substitute for medical, occupational, speech, behavioural or other therapy. Families should follow advice from appropriate qualified professionals when health or therapy needs are involved.

How much do private lessons cost?

Current lesson options and pricing are listed on the fees page. Confirm the applicable lesson format, venue costs and availability before payment.

What information should I provide when enquiring?

Share the swimmer’s age, current water experience, communication preferences, mobility or transfer needs, sensory considerations, supervision requirements, goals, preferred schedule and possible pool access.

Can a parent or caregiver attend?

Caregiver presence and poolside access depend on the swimmer’s needs and venue rules. Families should confirm supervision and entry arrangements before the first lesson.

How do I request a lesson?
